Online Friendship Safety After 50
A practical safety guide for South Africans over 50 who are making new friends or companionship connections online.
Keep financial information private
Do not send money, banking details, PINs, passwords or one-time passwords to someone you met through a social platform. A request for urgent money is a reason to stop and verify independently.
Take your time
Pressure to move off-platform immediately, secrecy, inconsistent stories or unusually intense declarations can be warning signs. Genuine connections can develop without rushing.
Meet publicly first
For a first in-person meeting, choose a public place, arrange your own transport and tell someone you trust where you are going.
Use reporting and blocking tools
If behaviour feels threatening, manipulative or inappropriate, stop contact and use the platform’s report or block functions. Keep relevant evidence when it is safe to do so.
